SurrealDB is seeking an experienced VP of Engineering to steer our engineering teams towards success. This vital role is open to candidates based in London or those preferring to work remotely. SurrealDB seeks people of the highest calibre - who are not only exceptionally talented, but who also care deeply about the work they do, and the people with whom they create and promote SurrealDB. We are seeking a leader who excels in the following key areas:

  • lead and manage the engineering team, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence

  • with the CEO, define and execute the engineering roadmap, aligning technical strategies with business objectives to drive product development and innovation

  • oversee the design, development, and implementation of scalable, reliable, and high-performance database cloud solutions, ensuring adherence to best practices and industry standards

  • implement efficient and scalable development processes, including agile practice and Dev Ops practices

  • collaborate closely with product management, sales, and other cross-functional teams to define product requirements, prioritise initiatives, and deliver solutions that meet customer needs and expectations

  • drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and methodologies to optimise efficiency, productivity, and quality of deliverables

  • stay up to date with emerging technologies, industry trends, and competitive landscape to inform strategic decision-making and innovation initiatives

  • build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, fostering open communication, transparency, and trust

  • provide strategic direction and technical leadership to the engineering team, promoting a culture of learning, growth, and accountability

  • manage engineering resources and budget allocations

  • provide reporting to the board and investors as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. MBA or other advanced degrees preferred

  • minimum of 10 years of experience in software engineering preferably working in established market players, with a focus on database technologies and cloud computing,

  • proven track record of leadership and management experience, preferably in a fast-paced startup or technology company environment

  • extensive knowledge of database systems (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, NewSQL), cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP), and distributed computing concepts

  • strong understanding of software development methodologies, architecture design principles, and DevOps practices (Jira/Linear, pipeline building and CI/CD management)

  • excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve common goals

  • demonstrated ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and drive results in a dynamic and rapidly evolving market

  • passion for innovation, technology, and driving positive change in the industry

  • proven ability to lead and manage teams as well as roll your sleeves up and execute when needed

  • adaptable and able to thrive in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.
